The NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU is the flagship accelerator of the NVIDIA Hopper architecture, succeeding the A100 (Ampere) generation. Its breakthrough lies in three key innovations: the Transformer Engine specifically optimized for large language models (LLMs), support for exascale-level GPU clustering (up to 256 H100s via NVLink Switch), and industry-leading performance for both AI training and inference workloads—delivering LLM training speeds up to 30x faster than the previous generation.
The Transformer Engine is a dedicated hardware unit in Hopper GPUs that automatically manages mixed FP8 and FP16 precision calculations, specifically optimized for transformer-based neural networks. Unlike general-purpose Tensor Cores, which require manual precision management, the Transformer Engine dynamically selects the optimal precision for each layer of a transformer model. For large language models with billions or trillions of parameters, this delivers up to 30x faster training than the previous-generation A100.
The NVIDIA NVLink Switch System uses a switch-based fabric that allows fully interconnected communication across up to 256 H100 GPUs. Unlike traditional PCIe switches or InfiniBand/Ethernet networks that introduce latency and bottlenecks, the NVLink Switch provides:

The NVLink Switch System supports clusters of 32 H100 GPUs per NVLink Switch domain . Multiple domains can be interconnected via InfiniBand or Ethernet for larger clusters, but the key capability is the fully non-blocking NVLink fabric within each 32-GPU domain—something no other GPU architecture can deliver at this scale.
The A100 supported NVLink scaling up to 8 GPUs via NVLink bridges (600 GB/s total bandwidth for 8x GPU pairs). The H100 supports scaling up to 256 GPUs via the NVLink Switch System, with all GPUs communicating at 900 GB/s each. For LLM training workloads, this eliminates communication bottlenecks that previously limited scaling efficiency beyond 32-64 GPUs.
